I argue that we should approach online textual interactions by students as sites of academic writing and I provide evidence of ‘intertextuality’, ‘metadiscourse’ and ‘epistemic modality’ I conclude that student messages are institutionally significant spaces for the negotiation of ownership and authority in the meaning making process of these emerging literacies. Introduction In this chapter I provide some comments on a recently published paper of mine, as a vehicle for drawing out both the seminal contribution that Ivanič’s work has made to my own thinking and the ways in which our work has come together and overlapped for more than a decade in a shared conceptual understanding of texts and practices – writers and contexts.
